Default Help - relays

Does anyone have any link, post, pictures or video on how to rebuild vacuum relays for the headlight doors. I’ve read all the posts on forum but cannot find any reference video or pics.

Thanks guys

Never even considered rebuilding them! This is a valuable bit of CF information. It took me a few reads to understand what the process was doing to regain the shuttle's seal. My only question is for reinstalling the shuttle: do you push it back in the whole way until it stops and fix it to the rod there or is there a midpoint sort of placement where it sits on the rod?

From the linked thread:

Interesting comment for those who've complained about P/B pedal sinking.

interesting.
I cleaned outside of valves, tested ok.
I have been wondering if there is a way to extend the life of the valve?

anyone have a method?

The rubber o-ring inside is what normally dries and dies. A drop or two of silicone lubricant into the the two outer pipes would help to keep them soft and sliding I would suspect
(brake fluid can help puff old dry seals up within reason)

Yes you push the spool down all the way so there is just enough actuator rod showing to install the internal tooth speed washer.
After the spool is removed inspect the spool for cracks around the sealing surface.
I had one spool that had several cracks in the sealing surface.
This spool is no good!
I also used a brass washer on top and bottom of the spool just to maybe keep the "O" ring in place if the superglue let go.

Like most things, if their working, leave them alone... Don't even side-eye them

Sitting and not being used it the worst thing for most of this stuff. I open and close the wiper door every time I think about it just so it moves now and again

Are you going to try and rebuild them? If so, make sure the diaphragm isn't leaking before starting.

Good idea! And you do that by hooking your mityvac to the small metal tip. If it holds vacuum, it’s good, and you can turn your attention to the shuttle.

Afesome idea, put here is 1:00 AM and I cannot go and grab muriatic acid anywhere now. But sand paper and elbow grease took me far enough. Great advice though.

Ok, so here’s how I did it.

They were rusted and super oxidized. I took a flathead screwdriver and pried the ring:

and pliers were more helpfull:

used a small flathed to pry it open (carefully, don’t damage the membrane)

cleaned everything with WD40 and contact spray

streched one o-ring to the far side and placed one on the bottom side, sealed everything with rubber gasket maker

swabed a thin film around the piston

placed a thin layer of vaseline around the piston

swabed a thin layer of gasket maker under and on top of the membrane and reassembled all together

bench pressed the ring together, sanded and painted

Tested, it holds. Super happy with performance and how it turned out.
