Default Tire combination

I have 255-60-15 all around on my 1981 and the rear is good, but thinking about putting the 225-70s on the front, anybody else have that combination.

Why would you do that?

If I remember correctly the 225/70’s may have a larger diameter

I suspect you want to do that because you may have rubbing on the front with those wider tires. Problem is that the outside diameter of the tires is obviously different.....not just technically, but I can see the difference visually. I personally preferred the 70 size tires on the car, even sacrificing the width, just because they fit the wheel wheels so perfectly. Ultimately, I switched to 17 inch wheels, and high performance Nitto tires, which have the exact same outside diameter as the 70 size 15 inch tires, and I can not go backwards.....the performance on the twisty roads is substantially and notiecable better. But......I love the original look of teh 15 inch tires,......except I would stick with the 70 size tires, which unfortunately are the worst performing of the tires I mentioned above. If you are not one to drive the car aggressively in the twisty roads........then I would go with 225-70-R15 tires all around.

I had a sweet 1980 here last year for engine work on its 406 and it had the 225/70 front and 275/60/15 rear.....on a set of old disc Centerlines with Hooker sidepipes and it looked mean as ****......it sounds like this setup would look wonky but it was actually very cool with the big and little look...had a very nice stance with about an inch of rake.......the rims looked bangin' on it too.....it was light metallic blue and just looked very different and very cool.

Because, that’s to wide for front, not very drivable on the front, not to mention throwing dirt or sand down the side of car because so wide, also,I don’t like the front end jacked up in the air,so either change tires or cut front springs, would love to drop front about an inch should be good.

Jebby.that sounds like it would be a good combination and from the back I imagine it would look mean from behind, not sure how they would fit my original wheels, but will have to see. Thanks.

Cut the springs to lower....trying to do it with tire diameter always makes it look like a compromise....

IF you want to do it because of tire rubbing/etc...make sure you do not end up with the same problem.

IF you want to do it for looks...make sure you do not create problems...then go for it.

I have manual steering, so larger diameter tires help a little in parking lots...plus the larger diameter fills in the wheel wells much better.

Sand, mud, and 'possums are just part of life

Has your front end been lifted? Switching to 225/70's won't change your ride height without chopping springs as you already pointed out the two sizes are virtually the same diameter. As long as your suspension is in good shape your car should drive fine with the 255's as many came that way over the years. The 225/70's were the standard tire on your '81 while the 255/60's you have were the optional factory size.

I like that combination,sounds good,and love the rake look,being about an inch,enough that it’s noticeable,but doesn’t look like a drag car. Nice

I think I like the sound of that combination with a set of now cragar klassics, the old keystone classic wheel,I think that would look great, but wondering if I should use like 15x8 rear, and 15x7 front. Or all 15x8.

I have 235/70/R15 up front and 255/60/R15 in the back, all on 8" wide wheels.
