My left front coil spring started squeaking on my 72. How can I stop this? Is there suppose to be a pad under the spring? I'm sure its the spring because I had a friend bounce the car up and down and I felt the squeak vibration on the spring and lower control arm and nowhere else.
Or upper shock mount not centered, therefore, shock stud contacting and rubbing on inner edge of frame mounting hole. This situation I find on many cars with front end squeaks.
Thanks for the replies, here's a little more info: The car is a newer rebuild. control arm bushings, sway bar bushings, shocks and ball joints are newer. At highway speed there is no squeak, it only squeaks at low speeds and it is a metallic squeak. I'm going to remove the wheel and upper ball joint and look for bare metal where parts are rubbing together. I'll post up my findings.
I'll found the problem. After tearing everything apart and removing the spindle, coil spring and all that goes with it, I found the nuts on the upper control arm weren't tight and the squeal was coming from the shims! Tightened the nuts and all is quiet. Took about 3 hours to do a 5 minute job! Oh well, glad it is done!
