I removed the A/C compresser on my 77 (incl. belt, brackets and two hoses that were connected).
Now I still have the rest of the lines, evaporator & the condenser. Can I just unbolt and remove these things and be done with it, or should I plug & reroute/reuse some lines?
I want to keep the heater on my car (I sometimes drive in the autumn).
Are the heater and the A/C completely seperate from eachother or are there lines that connect these two assemblies?
I removed it all on my 78 and kept the heater which is completely separate. Then after a hot summer I renewed and replaced all the A/C to keep the cabin temperature more reasonable! As it turned out the only bits I ended up re-using was the liquid line and the brackets.
After battling a faulty A/C on my '77 for a few yrs, I called it quits. Left the evaporator, dryer, and left most lines and the condenser. Pulled the heavy compressor w/ a forklift truck and both brackets.
I figure the next owner will appreciate the A/C valuable parts still around. In other words, if it was light weight, it stayed.
The lines should be plugged. Not to keep anything from coming out of the line but rather keeping dirt out of the system.
You can remove the evaporator, but you probably also want to get rid of the huge box it is mounted in.
Options are:
A) Replace your heater element with a non-ac model and find a cover from a non-ac car
B) If your heater element is OK then get an AC Delete cover. Google acdelete and look under Y-body on their site
These cars get bloody hot in summer. I upgraded my system (And posted a how to thread) and now I have a comfortable car in summer.
And I live in Queensland Australia. So, it's mostly summer all the time.
But it's your call. These cars get really hot inside!
And you have an early 77 based on the photos. It doesn't have a accumulater. That thing in your right fender is the VIR valve.
When I did my 77 it all went. I replaced it with a simple heater box from a 69 so I still had heat and defrost.
The 69 non ac box is obviously smaller so I glassed the fire wall opening to look like its always been there. In the car the center vents went and
the Corvette non ac filler plate got snapped in their place. Also wired it so the fan isnt constantly running all the time.
