Default Harmonic Balancer

Hi, I’m new on C3, first post since I sold my C5 in2010. I have a mostly original ‘70 coupe with L46. The balancer has a little wobble and I would like to replace it. The L46 has an 8” balancer that is 1 11/16 wide, per NCRS book. That’s what mine measures.
I have not found any that say they are that wide. Mostly 1 5/16, like the base engine uses. The narrower one would set the pulleys out of line.
Can anyone send me in the right direction to find that one?
TIA.

Check with Damper Doctor and Damper Dudes.
I dont have experience with them but they seem to be the go-to for correct harmonic dampers or to have yours reworked. Be sure to note where the timing mark is in relation to the keyway (assuming yours indicates peoperly with a timing light). And check that when you get a new one or yours rebuilt that same relationship exists.

It appears you are looking for 6272224 whereas the regular balancer was 6272222. The 2224 has been discontinued and I'm not seeing a replacement commonly listed. Check out this FS ad from 2020. Wasn't inexpensive! The 6272224 was replaced by 3947712 but that one's hard to find too! Look like having your original rebuilt is the best way to go.

I'm in the same boat, except my engine is the 69 L46. The Damper Doctor and Damper Dudes looks to be the best bet, although the car will have to sit while the old balancer is completed and shipped back.

Just use an 8" replacement balancer.......Dorman, Pioneer, PowerBond and others all make a premium replacement.......
Don't pay attention to the width, the pulley bolts to the face of the hub......not the outer ring and even then....the distance from the end of the balancer snout to the face of the outer ring is the same on all small block balancers.....it has to be, or there would have been millions of screaming people over the last 50 years......
Unless you are getting judged, buy the Dorman or the half dozen other good choices and press it on.......the pulleys will line up fine......
If your car was here at my shop I would install a balancer with timing marks on it and verify TDC on your timing tab....set timing per Lars specs.....all in one shot.......

EDIT - The OP has purchased a damper from me so it is not available anymore.

Measure the length of the bore thru the center. That is what determines where the pulleys will line up. About 2.35" The snout installs in all the way to the face of the bottom timing gear on the crank. The front face is where the pulley bolts attach that sets the belt alignment. The NCRS width dimension is critical if you want the points. Not as critical if you just need a damper that fits and lines up the belts right.

I have a good spare "2224" on the shelf. Send me a PM.

Bore length = 2.35"

Thanks for that info Jebby, learn something new all the time! My car is not a show car by any means so I will look into those replacements.
