If anyone could help me identify the location of the starter relay on the 1979 corvette that would be amazing. i just bought a corvette been sitting for some time a couple weeks ago. troubleshooting for the starting problem led me to try replacing the starter relay but i’m unable to locate it. Anyone have any diagrams or anything that would be of use? thank you!!
I think some Fords had starter relays, mounted well away from the starter itself.
As @interpon pointed out, in GM vehicles, the solenoid is mounted on the starter.
Have you replaced the battery, or tested it? It may indicate the voltage, but not have the ampacity to turn the starter motor. The neutral and/or clutch safety is also a common issue.
It's a sure bet that the GRD cable from battery to the frame needs to be de-corrosionized (new word).
Then, if the No-Crank issue is still present, it could be the solenoid.
The solenoid gets all the heat from the exhaust. The solenoid gets all the road corrosion on the posts. The solenoid does most of the work. Not only taking the voltage but engaging the Bendix. Thats why the solenoid wears out five times as fast as a starter.
If you end up buying a new solenoid, look for a brown end cap. Those are heavy duty ceramic, a little more money and can handle the heat better.
