C3 starter wiring image - annotated.
To "hotwire" this starter you can either apply 12V to the Ignition Switch lug, OR
Jump between the battery lug (big) and the solenoid lug (big) right next to it. Expect sparks!
Why might you hotwire it? To determine if your "no crank" is caused by a failed ignition switch (or wiring) versus failed battery cable vs. failed starter!
If memory serves that red wire is my addition; the connection to the fusible link is hidden beneath/behind that.
I ran a 10AWG from the alternator post to the starter lug when my battery never charged above 12.5 V. There was excess drop in the fusible link and wires on both ends. Of course that's the wire the ammeter monitors the voltage drop across to indicate amps. So I created a parallel path, forsaking the ammeter for a fully charged battery - for now. And forgot about it.
In lieu of a fusible link in that circuit I should absolutely install a MaxiFuse and holder. maybe today!
I'll get around to replacing the original, the FL, and adjusting the wire lengths to calibrate the ammeter ---- some day. But not "
