Default 78 starters used glue when mounted?

The AIM calls for "cement" around the starter nose. Such as weatherstrip adhesive? Did they actually do so and if yes, what for? Keep water out?

Cement? On a starter?

I know that the 1968 - 1972 Corvettes used a black sealer in this location. It was more like the black rope type sealer than a cement though. The intent was obviously to keep errant water out of the bellhousing.

You may want to look in the intro to your A.I.M…. The sealants, cements, fluids, etc. are all called out there by part number. A search of the associated part number may give you a better clue as to what was used.

A little research leads me to believe that this is the gray rope type sealer… Obviously, things didn’t change much between 1968 and 1978. The black rope sealer is easier to find, but if your stuck on originality, the gray rope sealer can be had as well.

Regards,

Stan Falenski

I found this: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ly-sealer.html
I myself wouldn't bother with it.

Learned something new today. Never heard of sealing the starter. Thanks!

The starter in my 77 was removed once since I owned it (1982) only to R&R the vertical ignition shielding a few years ago.
When cleaning it up I never noticed any sealant around the nosecone but there were a few dabs around where the wings of the solenoid do not completely seal off the gap between starter and solenoid.
It essentially extended into the corners where the orange lines are and where the gaps are around the solenoid yellow lines.
The red line is a small dab that was left behind...
It is such a small area when solenoid is installed I just used a few dabs of Black RTV...

This is where the guys who confuse cement with concrete get into trouble.
