Mounts for carrying the T-tops externally, the carriers dropped into those bungs and the tops strapped to the carriers. Don't see them too often anymore, but that is what they are for.

They are the threaded inserts for the V-54 Roof Panel Carrier brackets. The inserts accept the threaded ***** from these brackets.

The brackets and straps allow you to store your t-tops like this:

Thanks to JiminSTLouis for the pics of his beautiful 1980.

Almost complete setup (missing threaded inserts, washers, nuts, and storage bag) for sale here --not cheap: https://www.ebay.com/itm/12610248783...Bk9SR4TOiPTeYg

good luck!

V54 Roof Panel Carrier was available on 80 to 82 Corvettes. The carrier option included the carrier, tie down straps, a carry bag and supports to hang the bag on the right rear side of the luggage compartment. About 9000 cars were ordered with it over the three years. The main, center portion of the carriers turn up for sale from time to time, but the two outer brackets, storage bag, and especially the tie down straps, can be very hard to find if they're missing from a set.

Below is a good look at how the top carrier mount looks and works.

Here is what the carrier mounting nuts look like when they're nuts look like off a car.

Colin, check to see if you have the color matching storage bag and all the components. If so you have a find on your hands. I almost didn’t get my 1980 when I saw the grommets until I found out how rare the option was. The roof top carrier actually gets more attention than my Vette at car shows.

You could get 'creative' and fab up different specialized carriers for back there if you wanted. (bicycle/cooler/ski's, etc)

I'd pop those caps out and paint them body color. They'd look so much better blended in.

They're not caps, they’re threaded inserts. Painted white there'd still be holes.

I'd still paint them. The black makes them look like giant holes in the body.
