Default Drive shaft

I had my drive shaft out to get the tranny out. I noticed what appeared to be an orange and green-ish band.

Is that factor or the work of a previous owner/shop

Agreed. From what I understand, it guided the installer on the assembly line to put the driveshaft in the correct way, else it would be unbalanced and cause excessive vibration.

I’m going to guess that you have a 1968 or perhaps a very early 1969. Driveshafts of that era use the various color paint rings to identify the driveshaft (much like the C2 Corvettes).

By late 1969, the driveshafts used a stencil to identify the driveshaft and a paint mark (not ring) to indicate the direction of installation.

So, does the weight on the driveshaft go near the Muncie or the differential??

On my 79 some pics tell me tranny weight side..but for the money i would have it balanced with yoke..
i think it would be cool if you repainted and or labels

labels..pics show the only yellow markings i had in 79..i think they were differential side panted and my weights were transmission side AND a rectangle weight ihad on differential side

I can’t speak for the later C3s (like the 1979 shown), but I can tell you that the later 1969 through 1972 used a similar paint mark on the end of the driveshaft to identify the differential end. This paint mark was to be matched to a corresponding paint mark on the differential pinion yoke. The balancing weights are all rectangular in shape and are spot welded to the driveshaft tube. I’ve never noted the orientation of the weights, but on the 1970 that I am working on, it is on the differential end. As previously mentioned, there is also a stencil of the part number of the driveshaft assembly painted on the driveshaft tube. This assembly included the driveshaft, installed universal joints, and probably the transmission yoke; it was never offered as a service part. As mentioned by another poster, this assembled configuration is how you should balance a driveshaft.
