Default 70 Front Bumper question

I ordered a aftermarket front bumper and the chrome is bad. They will take it back for exchange or refund. My question is… The bumper that was on the car had a couple of very small dings. I can have it fixed and re-chromed for 650.00 or get the exchange. Does anyone know if you can tell if the old bumper is actually original? Differences I can see is the older one has a sharper crease in the center, the ends are a little more rounded and it seems a little heavier. There is a stamp on the inside J23 but that’s it. Just trying to decide if re-chrome is a better way to go. Thanks

Hi, Bill
I have seen many reproduction front bumpers and the just don’t fit, especially as the make the corners, They don’t tuck in the contour is not pretty.if your bumper you had on car fit well it’s likely original, bring it to have it rechromed,

Save yourself the headaches and take the refund and rechrome the original. $650 is a good deal these days if it is tripple chrome plated..

$650 is a fair price and you will have a much better chrome finish.

Hey Bill,

I have lots of pictures of a E'69 original front bumper that I can share with you if that is of any help to you. I know you have a '70 front bumper but I believe they are similar from 69-72. Glad to share pics with you if you shoot me a PM and I'll give you my email address. There are several places on the inside where the welds are located and on the upper lip of the front bumper that will show you if what you have is an original or a reproduction. Weight is certainly one hint what you have is original.

FWIW, I just had my front bumper triple chrome plated for $895. Took my front bumper to the chrome plater on 8/30/2023 and got my batch of nine parts back on 11/16/2023. So, $650 for the front bumper is a great price.

Like the others, I would also recommend re-plating what you have.

original weld for center support

round circle area where the bumper was originally hung for plating

You would probably not see these depressions on a reproduction. I would assume the repros would be polished out and smooth prior to plating.

HI All,
Good morning. Just another day in Paradise. I agree with the idea of redoing the original bumper. I just put a new bumper on my '72 and the drivers side corner does not have a good fit. To do it again I would have the original bumper redone and still may.
Have a great day,
Fred
