Default gas tank relocation..

good morning everyone, I'm still working on my 81 convertible conversion and now in order to provide a little room for travelling, I want to remove the spare tire holder and relocate a gas tank down below the frame rails. Thinking old Impala or any car type of tank with the fill out the back under the license plate. Then I can box in the original tank area and open it into the cockpit to use for small carry on bags. I think Doorgunner did something like this but can't find it on my miniscule phone screen. Want to use this for a Route 66 or Alcan Hwy crossing next year.

Tried to make a drop down trunk in the spare tire area but not having much luck with that...

Without the frame rails you have zero protection in a rear-ender - can you say 'Pinto'

If you need space for luggage etc., think about making a luggage rack from the earlier C-3 fit. Jerry

If you own a corvette, and you want to do long multiple day trip, you need to learn to pack. We did the road tour from MN to Denver for the 2015 NCRS convention. We have a 78, packed in multiple small soft sided bags and utilize the two cargo bins. Granted that does not compare to the trip you're planning. I would say leave the gas tank alone, safety being the biggest reason. Pack light and wash your clothes at the hotels or wherever you're staying. Invest your time and money in making the suspension more enjoyable. I believe that would take a lot less time and money.
If you do go with your idea, keep the forum updated, I am sure that a lot of people that would like to follow your progress. Best of luck.

Much easier and safer solution...
AND you can keep the spare tire for the road!

Not a newbie to long distance road trips, just did 11k miles in my '12 Camaro convertible and trust me top down doesn't leave much room for luggage, did NY to Alaska and back and Route 66 twice.
I understand the crash safety aspect of the spare tire unit but with everybody and their sister driving some sort of SUV, I think in a rear end collision that height of those is just going to ride up and over my low car and I'll be dead anyway.

So what I would do is convert a luggage rack to work on your set up. Then take one of those plastic gas boat tanks and ratchet strapped to it! Done!
