Default CE steering wheel

Hi Guys, I have a 1982 Collectors Edition. A previous owner replaced the steering wheel with a silly looking smaller black wheel. I am looking for a proper CE wheel and all the parts to assemble it and the horn button. Does anyone have a diagram of how it is all assembled, and does anyone have a USED wheel and all the parts for sale, please?

Thanks.

Do you have a Assembly Instruction Manual and the GM service manual for your specific year. That is a good starting place. I would image all the parts are readily available from the various vendors. Below is a information from I post I started in 2009. It might be helpful or not.

I'll give it my best shot. The upper horn contact is most likely dirty or corroded. My horn button would not even depress. You will need to pop the button off. You will see 3 Phillips head screws, remove these and the contact assembly will come out. This assembly is held together by 3 plastic rivets. My assembly was held together by 3 steel bolts, if my horns did work, they would have sounded all the time. The part which the button fits into probably needs to be cleaned. If you take it apart don't loose the paper shim. This is key to the horn working. The paper goes between the above mentioned part and the part which has the bent bracket/lever. This is what touches the pin/spring/insulator. By having the paper between these two pieces this gives the button spring when you press it. You can purchase new plastic rivets or as I did, I went to the hardware store and purchased 3 plastic screws and nuts. This may sound Bubbaish, but it saved me about $20 for a new upper contact and best of all it works and I fixed it rather then replacing it. I hope I explained so you understand it. Good luck.

Hi Kingkohlmn,
Thanks for such a quick response. I have no books on this particular year. I have a 1980 Vette and I have workshop manuals on it, but the 1982 steering wheel and horn assembly is different. I have looked for exploded diagrams or photos online, but I have not been able to find any. I also looked at the vendors for new parts, but they are much more expensive than I ever expected. So, I hoped I’d find someone with used parts which I might buy at a more reasonable price. Unfortunately, the information you posted about the horn assembly doesn’t really help me, but I appreciate your effort, anyway. When a previous owner replaced the wheel with a smaller one, he never connected any horn at all. The horn is now on a separate button further down the steering column! So I need to figure out what parts I need, how it all goes together, and hopefully find used parts.

Thanks.

I have a used original CE steering wheel. The outside leather is in great shape but inside filler material has slightly disinigrated. I used it that way for many years before replacing it. I will sell it to you for$100.00 plus shipping if you want it. New replacements run 350 to 400. Bill

Does it happen to come with the horn assembly and all the little adaptors and bits too?

Can you post a picture of what you have? It might help people understand what you need.

I found YouTube to be very helpful when doing steering column work. Unlike Ikea furniture, there's a lot of stuff that needs to happen in a specific order, and a diagram doesn't really capture that.

If you can't find one online somewhere, start looking at the corvette wrecking yards, somebody should have one.

I need everything that goes onto the steering column in the wheel area. The wheel that is on the car now, replaces everything - all the little parts that make up the horn, the adaptor, etc. I will upload a photo in a few days, and hopefully it will explain my situation. I am away from home right now. Meanwhile I will look at Youtube as you suggest.

I have a major disadvantage with wrecking yards; I am located in Ireland!! I don’t know if any of the wreckers would ship to here. Do you have any names of wreckers that might help?

Thanks Guys.
