I just looked at my bottle of stabil. It says it keeps gas good for up to 24 months. But leaded gas on its own can last 2-3 years, it loses some octane over time because the lead additive can settle.
I have repaired many Motorcycles that had old fuel in them. It's really expensive! If there's any doubt, get it out now.
oh, and the sniff test works fairly well. How does it smell?

Wellll...It's complicated. Problem number two is that it has a locking gas cap and I have not been able to find the KEY. I am trying to avoid having to make a new post -- Title: What Is The Best Way to Remove a Locking Gas Cap When You Don't Have the Key? Pray for me. Haha!

If it doesnt have ethanol in it it could last a year or so without stabilzer. With ethanol you would be hard pressed to make it through 6 months. The fuel stabilzer will add a year easily but dont overdo it...it will run crappy with too much stabil, but it will run
When I bought a car with a locking gas cap that didn't come with a key I just carried a big pair of Channelocks around until I got a replacement gas cap.

Additionally, there was a Sunoco web article I posted a while back focused on octane. It stated that the higher the octane rating the longer the storage life of the fuel. 87 octane had about a 3 month shelf-life while 92 octane had about 9 months.

The last sentence says it all...."the race gas can last upto 2 years."....just like the old gas, no ethanol
From a BP fuel engineer (not me): “for a stabilizer to work, you have to add the stabilizer first, then add fresh gas. Just adding stabilizer to an already full tank will not “
