I purchased a new Hurst shifter for my 69. After installation, the shifter hits the left of the center console and it is VERY hard to get into reverse. Anyone else have that problem. I did purchase one specifically for CORVETTE

I just rebuilt one using the 5speeds.com kit and it definitely requires some force to get into reverse. I assume that's how it should be since it doesn't have a reverse lockout? As for hitting the left side of the console, do you have this spacer between the body and shifter handle?
The shifter handle that mine has is also slightly "bent" away from the shifter body.
I was able to fiddle around and adjust mine to just almost touch the bezel when in 1st or 3rd gear. I am using the T10 specific linkage as that's what i am running in my 72. Going into reverse will get hung up every now and then and forces a shift back to first then back into reverse again. Seems like the Hurst linkage just isn't as fluid in setting the lockout mechanism.
The shifter needs the spacer and you might need longer bolts to get a good grab I used the fake shifter for a hurst it looks like the real one but it’s not I wanted the OEM a look I have NEVER had a problem
Foreman are you saying you have the hurst shifter with the stock handle? I was looking to do the same thing is that an easy mod??
It should just bolt right on. @southerncarparts sells one for 77-82. Perhaps for earlier cars as well. It doesn't make the reverse lockout work, though, it's just an appearance mod.
Yes they sell just the handle for a hurst I have been using it for years it has the t pull up but it’s fake I love the way the hurst is tight but hated the look
I bought mine off eBay years ago I do not know if the one showing for 68-72 .. I know mine is straight with a 1/4 in off set
I used Hurst shifters in all my manual vettes. They worked without issue. I go to 2nd first then reverse but that is to stop reverse gear clash.
The last new Hurst I bought was probably 15 years ago from Summit. The complete shifter and handle was under $200. When I opened it up it was loose, the shims in between the gates were sloppy. I sent it back to Summit and got another one, it was the same. This time Summit had me ship it to the Hurst repair dept in Carson City NV if that is even around anymore. It took a month before I got it back and it was exactly like it was when I shipped it. Clearly it wasn't anything like the same model shifter I had in my 69 vette since 1981. I ended up taking it apart and fixing it myself and it worked fine up till the time it came off and was sold.
I think Hurst sold out years ago, I don't recall, but this like so many parts today just may be poorly built. I never had to fight to get into reverse with any of my Muncies or Super T10's with those old Hurst shifters.
Mines a 70s unit that I took apart and cleaned it and put new shims in white grease and it’s been flawless I used 5 speeds bushing kit that you can only get from him there’s absolutely no slop at all the plastic ones break all the time look him up he’s down in Florida
You can probably find them cheaper i think I paid like 60.00 back in the day you can put any ball you want on it .. you could probably modify the original one you have I was just lazy ..the t handle works but does nothing
