Hey all ... always get answers here so am hopeful. Anyways, went to do a complete brake job [1st time]. Each wheel had its challenges, from stripped bolts to broken lines. Got through that part but when I went to change the Master Cylinder, when pulling the old one out, all the inside parts started to come with it. Seemed to be held on to the MS by a rubber bushing. Not wanting to get into more than I wanted, I just reattached the old one back as I really wanted to make sure that the system was working. Welp, its not .... pedal goes all the way to the floor. Thinking that is still air in the lines which I need to correct. Question now is how to change that MS? Do I pry/cut the rubber bushing? I know that this is not normal as all the videos that I have watched have the MS coming out with no issue. Would appreciate any help with this one ... thanks.
I would add detail to your request including pictures, year, power brakes ... not sure what would come out of master other than the pin? details on did you bleed master etc.. did it work before you pulled it off etc..etc.
You're right ... I can get pics tonight. 1970. L46, non-power. Again, I just saw a bushing coming out with other inner parts [may have been just a pin], but just put it back in as this wasn't how I has seen others on video.
There isn't anything from inside the master cylinder that will come out on its own, unless it's completely rotted and there is brake fluid all down the firewall on the engine side and the interior. The MC's internals are captured by a lock ring. In case you aren't familiar, here's a diagram of a typical Corvette-style MC. I added the arrow to indicate the snap ring that holds everything in the case:
Welp, problem figured out. Pulled MC out again and did a more thorough inspection. What looked to be a mass of wires or something of some sort ended up being a nest of some critter with brake fluid/grease all over it. Whatever it was built its home in the rubber gasket. Going to reassemble new MC tonight and begin the bleeding process. Thanks all!
