I am working at re-carpeting my '73, and have run into a hair pulling issue when it comes to the storage compartment doors. Seems that the 50 year old cut pile carpeting on the doors has no intention of going away quietly. I tried wetting it down with some adhesive solvent, and that didn't seem to do a great deal to it. Same with acetone. I am using a razor blade with a handle, and it has been painfully slow going. I used a heat gun and it didn't help. I used hot water, and it helped somewhat, but these are the original doors and they still have the original labels underneath, and I don't want to get them wet and ruin them. Otherwise I would have immersed them. Does anybody have a suggestion for loosening the carpet chemically or otherwise? It's going so slowly right now, I'm almost ready to throw in the towel and buy new doors!
Try using some MEK. Pull up an edge of carpet and dampen a cheap paint brush working it back and forth while pulling on the carpet. It has worked for me before. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll see if I can find some tomorrow. But there is no pulling up an edge of the carpet. That's one of the first things I tried, and no go. Tried a pliers on it and all you get is small tufts of cut pile, if that.
They must have changed companies that they got their glue from. When I did my 69 when I took the screws out and removed the edge trim the carpet almost fell off. I used 3M 77 spray glue when I put new carpet in.
I can get MEK at my local Ace Hardware, but I live in South Carolina and rules change quite a bit between states.

Yeah, I was not at all prepared for this to be such a battle. My nearest Ace doesn't have MEK in stock, but one 30 miles away does.
I'm using the 3M 77 as well.
That's exactly what I tried today. It did help a lot, but I was breaking razor blades in the holder like crazy. So I resorted to mechanical means:
That did the trick nicely! Kind of like shaving it off. Afterwards I took my orbital sander to it with some 80 grit and finished it up.
HI, Good morning. Just a little on the damp side in Paradise today. I just finished replacing the carpet and doors and frames in my '72. The doors and frames were pretty inexpensive and a lot less frustrating. It turned out looking really good.'
Have a great day,
Fred
