Default '73 Dash Wiring

I bought my '73 with the dash out of it. Not a fun job to re-install, but less so when I didn't disconnect everything and take it out. I'm trying to figure out a couple of wiring issues, and here is one of them. The black wire shown with the plastic connector to the left of the steering column I'm assuming is the ground to the speedometer, as there is another one coming out of the harness on the right side for the tach. Here is the issue- the black wire from the main harness has a white wire, also coming out of the main harness, spliced into it. Not sure what is going on there, but it wasn't taped up- it was just as shown in the picture. I have about 3 different wiring diagrams, but they don't help much on something that's been cobbled up. Anyone know why this might be hooked up this way?

Hey Rich,
I currently have the harness from my '73 removed. Here is a picture of that section. As you can see there is no exposed White wire. The only White wires in the car are for the courtesy light and alarm circuits. If I had to guess, I'd say the PO probably had an issue with the courtesy lights, tapped into the circuit and added that ground. I would reconnect that White wire to it's proper spot, then trace it out both ends where you will probably find the fault.

Thanks for another reply, Greg! Well I dove right in and unwrapped that part of the harness. Then I found more cuts, splices, and additional, mis-colored wires until I had exposed all the wires from above the steering column to the rear harness plug-in and then some towards the fuse box. I'll spend some time tomorrow on it, but I'm debating whether it would be worth the time trying to sort everything out, or just order a new harness. Too bad they are so dang expensive.

I would repair the original. It's not that difficult, your just matching up colors.

I'm hoping to, but whoever did it cobbled it up good with different colored wires, bypassing things (far as I can tell), and I'm thinking the headlight switch wiring doesn't look quite right. I'll work on it today and see how it goes.

Thanks- Rich
