The heads don't look like aluminum open chamber heads.

There are two LS-7 engines in the early 1970s.

The first was the intended for production LS-7 from 1970. This was basically (with a few exceptions) a 1970 LS-6 Chevelle engine with closed chamber aluminum heads (842) in place of the closed chamber iron heads (291). It had 11.25 to 1 compression ratio, vacuum secondary Holley carburetor, and a revised camshaft that differed slightly from the 143 street mechanical camshaft (although still a street camshaft).

The second was an OTC LS-7 engine released around 1973. This was an all cast iron (block and heads), 454 cid version of the 1969 L-88. Heads were open chamber (cast iron), compression was 12.00 to 1, and camshaft was most likely the 180 cam used in the second design L-88 and ZL-1.

The engine listed on Bring A Trailer is the second version.

Two very different engines.

Regards,

Stan Falenski

The one on BAT says it has a 1979 date code.
Looks untouched, the way it came out of the crate, Tape, stickers and all.

Might be wrong, but I'd think you could build one from scratch for much less than $15k

I bought all the parts for my 10.5 CR LS6 individually, just a couple years ago, and my buddy got me several good deals, and I still spent $13k.
Mine has all the right castings, just incorrect dates. A correct dated, coded and stamped block would have run the price up another 2k. I passed.
I don't think this one should go any higher.
And it is only worth that if someone wants to pay a premium for the XCH code, proving it's an original OTC motor, but what is that really worth?
And you have to really want 12.5CR, race gas, and a wild ZL1 cam or you'll just be re-building it, anyway.
Small market.
