I'm looking for ideas on storing my hardtop. I know about the carriers but have limited garage space. Also the ceiling winch but I haven't seen much on those. I'm not sure how secure or safe they are.
Looking for opinions and advise on the best way to store these.
How much does it weigh? If you have the space, a ceiling winch seems like a fine idea. But you'd likely need to mount it beyond the garage door opener.
Once drilled into solid wood, it could probably lift the engine out of your car, if it had to (I wouldn't though). Make sure you use a stud finder.
I've hung the hood of my car from the 2x4 garage ceiling joists, and have it hanging from wall studs right now. Not an endorsement, but this system claims 150 lbs. Spread between two joists on two bike systems you can get 200 lbs.
I bought a used mercedes hardtop hoist and just screwed a pulley into the ceiling joist and put the crank on the wall
Many years ago my wife had an SL560, I attached as above and used it for several years without issue. I'm sure it will work just fine for a corvette hard top.
This method gets the hardtop within a foot of the ceiling.
Installing the 300# rated winch (More than enough lifting power) in the corner of the ceiling allows the hardtop to get within 6" of the ceiling. The corded control switch can be hooked/stored onto the wall until it is needed.....
6 years of operation/no problems. Just park the car in the garage with the door raised and mount the winch where the door will not contact the cable. (I have a roll-up door so interference was not an issue)
As other members said-mounting a pulley onto the joists, then mount the hoist onto the upper sidewall works well also.
I DID have to rotate the pre-installed light 90* and about 6" away from the hardtop
