So my 1975 Corvette doesn’t want to go into first gear. It’s a 4 speed. Also when I do get it into gear the shifter just flops around? It doesn’t stay in the gear position like it usually does. Is it a couch issue or transmission issue?
In addition to the above, check the transmission mount and the brackets used to mount the transmission to the frame and the shifter to the bracket. Also, check your clutch linkage. Usually misadjusted clutch linkage will make it hard to put the shifter in gear. Jerry
It's not a couch issue, or even an office chair issue. You'll have to take a look from underneath. It is possible that the linkages have loosened up at the transmission.
Yep,, as some guys said, likely the linkage is falling off so get under the trans and check it out so you can see it now before it completely comes apart and you have a idea how it should be attached..
I've worked on several, but they are harder for me to install from pieces in my hand as opposed to seeing it before I disassemble a compleat one. .
. I found I dont have linkage issues with a TKO or TKX. Possibly your piggy bank will allow for one....
I feel like I am in a flying saucer, with the front fenders and hood seemingly going high up in front of me and the car sitting so low. Great feeling.........

Ok, so I figured out what was wrong. I ordered a lower and upper shift boot, so I figured I would install those, then possibly take the care to a shop, after watching the videos and reading the advise I was concerned this was out of my DIY skill level. LOL Turns out it wasn't!
After taking off my lower shift boot, I started looking around before installing the new one to see if I could figure it out. That's when I noticed the bolt that connects the shift assembly to the shift mount bracket had come lose and was not threaded in. I was able to thread it back into place and all was good! Really glad it was minor and I was able to fix it.
Thank you everyone as always for your feedback. Its always very helpful!
