Not to mention the cost. I run a modified partly stock system in my 77 and it works really well.
best of luck to you. I'm certain someone has a take off housing out there.
Just be careful buying a used one. It might be good take off, or it might be one with a pinhole leak in it somewhere. If it is, when you go to draw down a vacuum, it will leak down and not be any good. Or even worse, one just about to leak. It might pass the vacuum leak test but night fail soon after you are done. That is a lot of work to do AGAIN if you ended up with someone else's problem just to save some money. When I did mine I bit the bullet and got a good NEW one Ecklers has one for mid 77-82 for about $400. Welcome to the world of Corvette parts!

4 Vettes,
Just curious how yours is set up? Still trying to decide what to do on mine - heres the backstory.
I got my car from my dad 8-9 years ago with a bad motor (rolled piston bearing). He got tired of what he says what repeatedly spending money on the AC over the years so it hadn't for worked for many years (he bought the car new). I wanted to fix the AC, so I got a new compressor, the VIR elimination kit when I rebuilt the engine. I put a new evaporator while I had the engine out, but didn't get around to putting the rest of the system on until a 4 years ago. took it to a shop to charge it up and they told me the evaporator was leaking and they had to pull the engine to replace it. I told them it was new and they said it wasn't any good so I haven't done anything since. Now I got the engine out to replace it and I am wondering if they were even correct as it still looks brand new and I dont' see any signs it leaked (wondering if leak was somewhere else).
I am also looking a serpentine belt kit that comes with a new compressor that fits there brackets - so just trying to figure all this out. Seems like the late 77 - 79 evaporator would fit in the same housing (based on just looking at pics so not reliable) and could eliminate the VIR kit? not an AC guy so not sure. when I redid the interior (after the engine build) I did put in a new AC control and all new vacuum lines - all the fans, doors, etc seemed to work as designed at that time.
I just want an AC that works the rare times I need it (I rarely drive without the tops off anyway) mainly for the wife.
OK, first, changing the evaporator has nothing to do with the VIR system.
I ran a How to thread a couple years ago. It's still here and explains everything I did, and learnt along the way.
I totally suck at posting links. If you click on my profile there's a line that says, all threads started by 4-vettes , click on that line. See my thread 73-E77 Air-Con upgrade. Sanden compressor, parallel flow condenser, VIR eliminater. Learnt that the pressure switch that comes with these kits is garbage. Temp switch on the line is far better, (adjustable switch available everywhere) trienary switch in place of factory low pressure switch, etc.
All factory doors, actuators, etc in the dash.
Oh, and I put in a C4 blower motor as well.
I live in Australia. It gets bloody hot here! It works fantastic!
