Default Looking for a cover update

I’m having a problem with my ‘71 in my garage. The family likes to dump their junk wherever it can fit - either behind my ‘vette, in front of it and they are walking their stuff past the car to go in the house. The other day my son put a paint roller and tape measure on the rear deck, it’s just a matter of time before someone will scratch the car. I have cheap covers, I doubt they provide any protection.
I could drape some of my moving blankets over the car, but the way my family is it would promote them to put more things on top of the car.

If anyone knows of a currently available good cover please let me know. One more thing to note - although the car is inside, there maybe a time coming when I need to pull the car out and park it outside for days while work is done inside the garage so a cover that can keep the car protected from the elements would be a plus.

Thank you for your time
Rich

I think you need to raise the roof about how they treat the car and by extension show respect for you. Regular life does rub against the car occasionally but those are not intentional as it sounds your family's actions and inconsideration are.

For regular rubs and life, I use flannel covers but they're not intended for outdoor protection. If your outdoor needs are short-lived then don't cover it; you can run into all sorts of paint and rust issues when storing a car outside under cover. If you elect to get an outdoor cover, make sure you remove it after a rain until both the cover and car are dry.

Another option that came to mind is renting a storage space for a month or two during the garage project - maybe do that long-term if the family can't get behind your needs.

This sounds like a personnel issue.

My human family is respectful, but I have a soft flannel cover from when cats shared the garage. Really good outdoor tarps cost a lot, and you don't need that. Outside for a few days? Tarp over a cheap cover. Longer than that? Rent a garage space.

As previously stated, you have to be careful on covering outside, trapped moisture can lift paint and cause mold issues, if my kids even thought of using my car as a shelf they would be outside living under a cover!

The only proper cover would be a condom. But since it seems too late for that, let everyone know in clear terms with no uncertainty, they can do whatever they want in the house but the garage is your domain. If you have a basement tell them to store all things there. If not then maybe get a shed for THEM to use for storage.

It never occurred to me the problems over storage outside. My pickup sat unused this spring and when I opened the driver’s door I was attacked by a swarm of wasps. They had nests in the door jamb and inside the rear view mirrors. I lifted the hood an found at least a dozen snake skins around the engine.

As for the family, my 21 year old son is the vandal in this house - has become so belligerent - he’s my wife’s little prince. She pays for his every need & need and he just expects he can do as he pleases. He goes to a very expensive school, car was given to him and insurance with upkeep included. He doesn’t like to eat at home so mom pays for all his meals. I remain injured and very limited and he can’t help in the slightest way. My hands are tied! (Sorry I had to get my rant in today.)

That sucks. I was thinking you had younger kids. Your wife has a real problem on her hands that she's not seeing. Hopefully sooner rather than later she becomes aware of how her actions are helping no one in the family.

Is there any way you can isolate the car from him? (I think a cover may even encourage him to use the car as a shelf.)
