68 4 speed BB 390hp 3.36 diff. Looked, possibly missed this on the forum. Installing new u joints on drive shaft. Is there a front or back on the drive shaft. When I first come to greasing the car had a problem greasing the u joints. Had to use a pointed app. to get job done and that wasn't 100 percent. Front zerk going forward, rear to the rear. Heavier weight to the front on drive shaft. Seems to me that was backwards. Heavier weight to the rear for more support, more stable coming off differential. Is this all moot because it is balanced. Need to get it right. First help post.. Please advise.
Rookie advice:
If the car hasn't had a vibration at different speeds the driveshaft should be O.K.
I have had to remove the rear end of the driveshaft to move it into position so that I could grease front and rear u-joints.
If you are asking, if there is a front & rear of any driveshaft when a transmission yoke is not attached,
then, yes, I believe there is.
How do you tell which end is which? IDK
I have seen welded-on weights on both ends of Fords.
Supposedly, the entire shaft with tranny yoke is balanced at the factory as one unit.
That's why it is imperative to mark a line with a paint pen on the yoke in relation to the shaft when disassembling.
I also paint a mark on the pinion yoke. Then I know everything is going back the way it was after installing new U-Joints.
As far as which way the zerk fitting is facing, is up to the installer.
Myself, I use Spicer Solids, no grease, super strong.
I think everyone agrees that Spicer solids are the way to go.
And absolutely mark everything before you loosen one nut or bolt.
I've had my drive shaft re balanced. Which end heavier weights go on has NOTHING to do with front or rear. But rather how it balanced. And the shaft shop wouldn't balance it without the transmission yoke.
They balanced, I marked again and removed the transmission yoke, installed the shaft aligning up the marks. That's how it's done.
If you removed the shaft without marking anything. Perhaps take it in with the yoke and have it rebalanced.
Otherwise your just guessing.
I'm going to remove it with yoke and have it rebalanced. Some vibration especially at higher speeds. U joints new on drive shaft, halfs u joints where installed not too long ago by previous owner, appear to be tight. I'll see after reinstalling drive shaft, if half shaft are a problem. Thank for the info!
