It appears to me that the corner molding has come loose from the fender, and that there's nothing wrong with the fender itself.
The corner molding is supposed to me attached with a screw in one end and 2 tiny molding clips on the top edge of the fender. Looking at the second picture in your original post, it looks like someone used Dum Dum or some kind of other Butyl type compound sealer to hold the molding in place instead of the 2 clips, and it has come loose or expanded? This isn't surprising because the clips can be a pain in the a$$ to get on.
That's a common C3 issue. The usual culrpits and things to check are:
1) Check front radiator/body mounts for being compressed (nose goes down, rear fenders go up)
2) Rust or adhesive delamination at the point where rear fenders adhere to the birdcage and could be pulled away and pushed 'up' a bit (remove some of the rubber at base of A-pillars to inspect).
3) Adhesive cracked on the upper fender 'surround' around sides of engine compartment (lift up/down on that area)
4) Mis adjusted doors which make the situation seem worse than it is
5) A little bit of all of the above
When you say you “noticed this today”, does that imply that you have observed a distinct change from how the fit/fair was previously or is it something you just now noticed? How long have you had the car? Any idea of its pedigree (accident history)?
It's also possible the door hinge bushings are worn and /or (probably both) ..the door wasn't aligned very well. C3 doors are very difficult to line up well. I have a lot of experience and I STILL took a bit more than 1/2 a day finding the BEST alignment on my car's doors. Most guys won't be that carefull and quit and live with a poor alignment.
