My aftermarket Doug’s side pipes have a T shaped bolt that goes into a hole in the frame, turns 90 degrees, then pulls against the inside of the frame rail as it gets tightened. Kind of hard to do, but I’ve found that using a 90 degree pick to hold it from rotating helps significantly.
Those T nuts you are showing are NOT just for side exhaust but for any rocker trim to attach to. The problem is, what you are showing is the REPAIR piece. Those were originally welded to the body channel when the body was off the frame. To put them in now, you have to remove the body from the frame. Or, you can JB weld them in with the body on. First you have to drill out the original nuts making the hole big enough to fit those through it.
Are you sure you need them? You would only need to replace them if you have to drill out the exhaust covers to remove them. If you are able to unbolt the side exhaust covers and get the bolt out then you should not have to replace them. Sometimes you can even just retap the threads and that’s all you need.
that is what i thought. i just took off one side and broke only one screw and I think I can drill and chase the threads. I also thought I could use a rivet nut if all else fails. I have used them on other projects and they worked very well. Thsnks for the info.
I never had to use those to mount my factory option sidepipe covers. The trim pieces that have to be removed already have these mounting holes in place. Just screw the factory sidepipe covers into place. Oh, There's a bracket at the from of the covers that bolts to the bottom of the frame. You have to drill these holes. The frame steel is easy to drill. Just make sure the holes you drill are not too big. You need to run a tap into the frame to make threads for the two bolts/sidecover.
Yea I get it. All I am doing is replacing the chrome covers with new Paragon shiny chrome covers. I already have the N14 option which came original. I am reusing everything else. I busted 1 mounting screw and I thought I would need to replace the nut hence my original post (which was made in haste because I didn't have the cover assembly removed). Careful drilling and tapping and all is good. Thanks for the response!
