Approximate birthday 1Z37L2S511845: January 20, 1972

Car is a coupe (37) that was built in St. Louis (S). The fifth character is the engine code. If it is a "L" it is a LT-1. K is Base. W is 454. The VIN should not have a "2" between the Z and the 3.

There should be a trim tag visible on the lower windshield post when you open the driver's door. That will tell your body build date and paint & interior colors. The body build date could be the same day or a couple days before actual completion date.

Yes, and...
  • The first 1 represents Chevrolet;
  • Z=Corvette;
  • 37; two-digit body style (67 is a convertible)
  • L; engine option ('72 was the first year to indicate engine in the VIN)
  • 2=1972;
  • S; '53 Corvettes were made in Flint, MI; '54 to mid-'81 were made in St. Louis; mid-'81 Corvette production moved to Bowling Green KY and still makes all Corvettes today.
  • 5= just a placeholder that Corvettes never used because production never exceeded 99,999 units. This placeholder changed a few times from year to year but doesn't represent anything specific.

Coincidentally, we used to own a 1972 LT-1 coupe, 1Z37L2S511937, built just 92 cars after the one you're looking at. Our body build date was F20, January 20.
