I’m getting all the parts together to replace my speedo with a broken odometer with new upgrading it to one with the speed warning option.
I’ve got all the parts needed to make it fully functional but wondering if I’ll need to drill out the back housing for the speed minder needle adjustment cable.
does anyone have a photo of the back of a speedo that has the speed minder yellow needle ?

You're better off finding the correct back. If you want to convert it needs the hole for the cable, the connector and a ground.
I will look to see if I took a pic
It’s helpful thank you.
Finding the correct backplate with the hole drilled is probably a bit of a unicorn, I’ll doa search but I’m not too optimistic.
had people tell me I couldn’t find the cable for that but their out there if you search the original part #.
Maybe the backplate … ???
The camaro cable is the same part number. We posted it on another thread
Yes that was me .
I was told it was impossible to find so I went to the AIM manual and got the factory part #, searched that and found it was the same for the camaro… but without the Corvette tax.
I’m looking close at your pic, at first glance I thought it had a nylon grommet but with a closer look it appears to just have a hole drilled which the cable jacket clamps to and when assembled the cable is guided into place in the speedo (?) Am I correct ?
I believe you are correct. I don't recall removing it. It was installed and my main concern was the indicator, buzzer and getting the mileage correct
Looking at it again, I’m going to test your memory here, it suggests to me that that portion circled here is to be crushed once put in place like a rivet or wall moly/anchor to prevent it from being pulled or falling out of its position.
I’m think it’d be set in place with a punch or maybe a deep socket (?).
Seem right to you ?

I did find this, it has pics of the backcase. I believe you are correct in that you set the cable into the case, make sure it's in properly and functioning , then grip it in. It is the upper right hole in the pic https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...nd-extras.html

Finally found what you need, same discussion we are having here. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...g-upgrade.html
Ernie was saying you may need the speedwarning case. You will have to compare the pic to yours for the extra relief.
"You'll also need the dial reset cable that mounted on the other side of the odometer reset cable. If you got to your assembly manual to I think U15 option, you'll see this cable. There is a special white receiving cup on the back side of the speedometer where this cable is attached.
You'll also need the housing, I don't think a non speed warning speedo has the relief in it for the re-set cup.... I can verify that in a couple of hours. At my office (I'm not there yet), I have some great pictures of this, I'll see if I can dig some up for you.
The speedo is discontinued... it's on my site but for reference only so if you do decide to do this I would purchase the speedo first just to make sure your vendor of choice still has one. Also make sure if the car is a 68 that the head is not a threaded head... some of the reproduction speedometers for 68-69 have the wrong head on them.

Now looking at the picture Rick posted, in the upper right hand corner you'll see the speed warning limit setting cable.... The cup (housing) that holds the stock gauge will not have this provision in it... Can it be made in a stock housing... I like to believe I can do or make anything in my shop, but at some point cost has to enter the picture.
If you look at the picture below you'll see what I'm talking about.
1) The grounding post.. you won't have this on your original gauge housing and you'd have to work a way around this.
2) The Limit cable... not going to be there, and it would be really difficult to replicate.
3) The grounding clip... This would be a easy fix.
My advice to you would be to look for a used complete speedometer and then work from there because you'll need this "Can" to pull off the swap.
Thank you that helps with placement. I’ve got the U15 cable, the buzzer, wiring and speedo. Just got to put it all together.
what I am waiting on is a better tach I ordered. Mine works but has rust and an obvious paint repair on its face. Led bulbs have been ordered. The incandescent bulbs are bright enough for me and while I’m in there I think I’m going to break down and buy a quartz clock for it.
I saved all those pics and took screen shots of the posts to refer back too. Thank you greatly for your help !
no problem...You definitely only want to pull all of that out once
True. Well the clock is ordered too now. Trying to anticipate any small items that may pop up.
Theres the gasket for the gauge lens, what do you think the chances are of reusing it ?
Is there anything else that comes to mind that I might need when I go to put it all in ?

I believe my gasket was trashed but had to piece it together cause I didn't order one, maybe clean your light switch and ignition switch terminals, yo said your doing bulbs, maybe check all your fuses while you can get at them easy, maybe seperate the fuse box and check the back for corrosion. Maybe switch the oil pressure line to a steel braided line. There was a thread on that a month or so ago. If your dash is ugly you could re-dye all the pieces while they are out. If you pull the steering column you could check your rag joint to see if its worn. How's your dash wiring harness look?.....Lectric Limited sells a new one for $760...how much of your money and time do you want me to spend???? Lol
Pulling the seats will make this easier to do so you could look at new carpets too. How's your accelerator cable look, if its fraying no better time to get to it, and make sure you are getting full pedal throw. The arm bends over time and you won't get wide open throttle without straightening it out.....did you want a 5 speed?
I didn't mention the heater core...theres that too

Already cleaned up the fuse box, replaced the rag joint (it was terrible), dash was replaced by the PO, the wiring was burnt when I got the car so I’ve done that already, I replaced the oil pressure line with nylon air brake line and covered it with shrink tubing to add abrasion resistance, last fall I also replaced the heater core and rebuilt the box.
Checking the throttle cable and pedal throw is a good one. I’m thinking I’ll order the gasket kit too.
as for a Tremic it’s good with the 4spd. When I blew the 3.08 posi last year I replaced it with a 3.36 geared unit. It’s a great all around gear for this engine.
