I also have used some of the "marker light sockets" as Old Car Bum is showing. They are the only thing that is available at your average auto parts store. I found that I had to trim the rubber a little with a razor knife to fit. I took one of the leads and stripped a little bit of wire and then looped it between the socket and the metal to provide the ground. Worked well.
You can get the sockets and bulbs from Rock Auto.
Pretty cheap.
If you order them, keep in mind the bulbs come in a two pack.
I now have a lifetime supply.
I purchased the bulbs and sockets Richard454 provided the link for.
I installed them in my 73’s center gauge cluster, tach and speedo housings.
They fit perfect and are much nicer than the oem’s.
Nice and snug so the bulbs won’t work loose and fall into the gauge clusters.
Did you use these on the two wire bulbs in the center of the Speedo and Tach?
Sounds like Richard454’s suggestion is solid. Yes, a brighter light. Longevity? Maybe not on par with original. But, I myself would sacrifice a bit of longevity for dependability and a simplification of things. I know, to each his own. Some would deal with the antiquated stuff, the dropped bulbs, lack of grounds, so as to be “original”. I do get that. Some things on mine I will definitely take that approach. Other things, the mild, not visibly changed from stock upgrades (to the common eye) are worth the benefits. But again, to each his own!
What means "two wire bulb"? Does that mean power and ground? Two filaments in the bulb for extra lightness? Or something else? Or did you mean two wire socket?
Pardon me but all this work seems a phew photons too far.
The sockets I showed from Summit plug into the existing hole and are grounded. LED's are quite bright enough and mine for whatever reason are dimmable.
I will add one further wrinkle, power to all the bulbs can be ganged together and routed to a connector with the power source on the other side. This greatly eases the reinstallation of the speedo and tach cluster. You put the cluster in with the bulbs already installed and then just hook up the connector. Myself I only have two hands.
