The piece between the radiator and the hood that runs side-to side with a dip in the middle. Seems substantial, pretty thick steel. Is it something I need? Thanks for any help you can give me.

That bit's called the radiator support. Looks like an 82 support with that big dip in the middle. A 77 radiator support is dead flat. No dip.
I still have the original factory one in my car. I am old. I have owned my 77 since dirt was new and Christ was a Corporal.

So glad you shed light on the mystery. Now I know why I couldn't figure it out. One more part to buy. Thank you for the reply!

The radiator support is a common rust area. Perhaps the original support was badly rusted, as is very common even on otherwise rust free cars. And the previous owner got a good deal on a 82 style support. And made it fit.
Could be an interesting job putting it back. Other than the dip in the center top, I don't know what else may be different.

Could be. The piece shown in the pic is bolted on, and is not part of the whole surround. I am told that the 1977 support is all one piece. I have to verify that because I do not have access to an unmolested 1977 Corvette to see what a proper support should look like.

I believe a length of 2" angle will make things look very nice. Little cutting, a little welding, a litke grinding. That will work. Thank for the info.
