Default Rally Wheel Paint

hi all, is there a consensus about who makes the closest match to the 68 argent silver (w/o the green tint) in a rattle can? hopefully in a formulation that will hold up and that i can buy at NAPA or some other flaps. in searching the inner webs there seems to be two argent silvers with one having a slight green tint. apparently, the years 69 and 70 (?) had the tint and the other years did not. this makes it hard to figure out what the vendors are selling with most listings covering all years.
and in a related question, is there a way to minimize the scratches caused by the beauty rings and caps? thanks.

Here is the WA code for Argent Silver.

National Parts Depot sells an Argent silver rattle can paint.
It’s basically just a silver paint.
When I dropped my original spare on my 1968 car, I noticed the silver has a darker tint to it than the Argent silver I bought from NPD.
Im deciding if I want to go thru the time and expense of matching the color to my original spare.

Wheel on the car is the 69 color which has a green tint.
spare tire is original off my 68 car which is a darker silver and almost has a very slight green to it (at least to my eyes)
rim in front is rattle can Argent silver from NPD

Joe,
I think aging on the paint may make it look different as well. Try soft polishing compound on the Spare wheel and see how close it is then.

thanks for all the info guys, it's been very interesting. i thought it would be nice to find the "correct" color for my wheels but i think i'm going to stop obsessing about it and go with what i've got. that would be rustoleum semi gloss black for the back and aluminum for the front in the 500° engine enamel over a coat of POR15. thanks again.

Wait. Polishing compounds are like a car wax but more aggressive.
Once you apply any product like that, you will never get any paint or primer to stick properly. aka "orange peel".
Only Acetone will remove the compound.

I have been impressed with Rally Silver from Eastwoods Paints.
A little pricey w/ shpg but all of their paints are top notch.

I have a few formulas for argent silver in my files. One thing to keep in mind is that the original wheel paint had various levels of grass green lacquer added to the silver paint so some wheels may have a different level of green tint. Here is one formula I have below. The best way that i have found to match the correct wheel paint is to have take the original spare to the auto paint supply store and have them match the color.

SKUDESCRIPTIONINC. (PART)***. (PART)
DMD649 CLEAR 38.2 38.2
DMD1687 MED. ALUM. 90.1 128.3
PRL93 GOLD PEARL 13.3 141.6
DMD641 YELLOW 5.3 146.9
DMD691 BLACK 3.1 150.0
DMD646 WEAK WHITE 1.2 151.2
PRL91 GREEN PEARL 1.2 152.4
DMD1693 GREEN 1.0 153.4
DBX1689 CLEAR 104.6 258.0

I second the Eastwood's Rally Silver is available as well the Silver Argent wheel paints from Eastwood. Eastwood has made it easy to get the best paint job. First I wipe the rim down with PRE cleaner and then spray paint them getting every square millimeter of surface covered. I let them dry and a day or two later I have the tires put back on the rims.

The 1968 Corvette might have used a slightly different color but some of us who are color blind will likely never notice. I keep my 1968 in the Rally Silver and they look great for a few years and then I paint them again.

thanks for posting that pic.

Took those photos years ago and do not real remember the year. But I think it was later build 1971 original spare tire.

What a great article!
Thank you!

At the end of the article, it mentions that the wheels could be any number of colors.
Metallic silver, green silver, gray argent, etc.
