Default Steering wheel options

Greetz All

I have a 1969 and would like to replace the thin black steering wheel with one smaller in diameter and with a thicker ring. I am looking for something that does not look out of place. Maybe cover professionally with leather ?

The column is a T&T and I want to preserve that functionality.

Suggestions ??

This was the best value and best looking I could find, closest to the original with the correct depth, and it's been fantastic!

I also have a Volante steering wheel in my 80. Seems to do the job, and the diameter is just right (a bit smaller than a stock 80 wheel), but the grip could be thicker, like a modern wheel.

MAMO sells plenty of them:

And here's the manufacturer's site:

I was not a fan of my original 1974 steering wheel. I ordered the leather cover from Wheel Skins. It made a huge difference in feel and appearance. It took me about an hour to lace it up and was an inexpensive way to make the wheel look and feel much better.

I put in a smaller wheel to replace the original boat tiller. Looks OK and improves the reaction of the car to driving conditions. The downside is it obscures some of the instrument panel.

It looks pretty much period correct too. But I do like the steering wheel in my C8 a lot. Would something with a rim like this look too out of place? It just feels good to grip.

Besides the shape, it provides a better view of the instrument panel. The center would need to be more like my first picture, not all the space that is there for an air bag*. Anybody seen anything like this rim?

Dale, would you happen to have a pic of your steering wheel?

And a follow up question. I find the steering wheel’s ring to be too thin. Did the wrap change that feel ?

That doesn't look like the correct wheel for a 69, it is flat and doesn't appear to have any depth?

Hello again Dorian,

I took a quick look in the Mid-America Catalog and they sell the variety of different steering wheels like many of the pictures are showing. I have one of them as well and it makes it so much easier to use the smaller wheel as a convenience.

Here is a link, I hope it works over there: https://www.mamotorworks.com/corvette/search With this link you will see the variety of different styles and types of steering wheels MA sells.

The Steering Wheels are a bit more expensive than when I bought mine. The one I have has aged very nicely and not fallen apart like the cheaper copies I have seen. It is a well made replacement and the center cap still fits on it. I clean it occasionally and polish the aluminum every so often and it looks great!

I wish you and your family a Wonderful Christmas Holiday!

Best regards,
Chris in Fairfax

This is my stock 1974 with the Wheel Skins attached. It adds a little thickness and the wheel no longer looks and feels plasticky (is that even a word?). They sent the lacing, a needle, and had an installation video. It probably took me an hour to install myself with no special skills. I’m really pleased with the outcome and the minimal cost.

It's not flat but it does have less dish than the original. I'm a tall guy so it helps to get the wheel farther away from me.

Greetz All. Closing the loop on this one. Thanks for all the input. I finally sprang for a steering wheel from Mid America and am very pleased with it.

The diameter appears to be the same. The rim is thicker and not sticky. Both extremely welcome. Build quality seems good. #pleased

70's Trans Am ... FLAT, pain to do but the look and added real estate, PRICELESS! LeCarra wheel.
