I am wanting to replace both the front and rear bumpers on my 77 project while I am repainting it - I want to add a small spoiler to the back, but otherwise keep the stock 77 look. I see 82 style rear bumpers for the 77 without the little "bumperettes" but none with. are there any options to just add a simple small spoiler to stock rear end? I am not too opposed to just using the 82 style, but just wondering if there are other options? There are also different fiberglass (flex vs non flex) and different manufacturers. I am not going to glass the new bumpers to the main body and will mount oem style with retainers. Any input would be appreciated as I shop for the bumpers over the weekend.
I have replaced both front and back on my 78. All I can tell you from what I discovered was 1) get rigid bumpers, not flex fit. And 2) buy ACI products. You get what you pay for. And I have not glassed mine in but used Dub’s (RIP) method of fitting them. Search the forum he has a great thread for “fitting a rigid bumper”. Good luck.
Both of the bumper covers on my 77 have been replaced. Up front a replacement urethane bumper cover , fit great but comes with the waves.
In the rear, which came a couple years later, a flex fit fibreglass cover. Unlike the gentleman above, I was advised that was the only way to go. No waves. Also fit nicely. I run a Indy pace car style rear spoiler. And have for many, many years. But I realise that particular spoiler isn't everyone's favorite.
Looks very 70's. Yup that fairly well sums it up. I like it. This was one of the very first things I did to my car way back when. Long before the flex fibreglass bumper cover.
Regarding the bumpers, my advice is to carefully measure the car body dimensions and then confirm the bumper dimensions with the vendor.
In my case, it wasn’t until the third pair of bumpers that I found a proper fit, saving me from the nightmare of cutting them into four pieces and re-glassing them back together. It was a horror show.
Bumpers from ACI turned out to be the best fit. It was sufficient to fill them around the perimeter to match the body.
I have a lot of ACI fibreglass on my car. Good stuff. Great fit. Never went through any huge issues with fitment. But I read on here that many do. The way these cars were originally assembled there are indeed some variations. Looking at many, many C3's over the years. I have been a judge at many shows.I have found most C3 bumper covers fit less than perfect. And while the owners get super picky about it sometimes. The average onlooker seldom notices.
And back when new. most were far from perfect. Yet, today, guys want a perfect fit!
So, how much trouble they are to fit really does come down to luck and how picky you are.
