Ignition/Wiring Issues
When you try to start it are you in park or neutral? If not the neutral safety switch will prevent the starting from working.
The brake light can be on either because of the emergency brake switch or the distribution block. The e brake switch is easy enough to get to in the center console, and you can try resetting the distribution block by quickly stomping the brake pedal. It may take several tries.
Battery power goes to to starter solenoid, ends with ground cables from frame in back & engine block… start there, work backwards, wiring in these cars aren’t terribly complicated, the diagram will be your ultimate guide… unless there’s all kinds of Bubba connections that complicate life.
On my 1982 there is a brake light switch just above the pedal, I can’t see it in your pic but look for a white plunger like switch. If it’s not touch brake pedal arm it’s probably extending which lights up brake lights.
maybe buy a cheap push button remote starter switch, they are cheap….they are used to activate the starter without key, make sure your not under car, wheels are blocked and it’s in park if you use one. The remote switch is like hot wiring the car but a bit safer. The remote switch is to test if the starter is even working anymore. Make sure your battery is full above 12 volts and if starter sounds bound up sometimes you can tap the starter body with a small hammer to get it rolling again. Looks like it’s been sitting a while.
