Is this from the NCRS shipping report or did you get the numbers off the tank sticker
Its from the NCRS shipping report, 1971 Lt-1 im trying to track. According to some info i found they list Portland Maine as zone 43 other claim it could be Maine, New Hampshire or Rhode island......i have tracked the registrations back to Massachusetts from 20 years ago...but i guess that doesn't help too much.
Trying to tack down where my car was sold new. Would anyone know what dealer code 34 in zone 43 is
I posted this years ago… If you know the zone number, this will give you a general idea of where the car was sold. Zone 43 had its corporate offices located in Portland, Maine.
The following are a list of zone numbers attached to the corresponding zone name which should be accurate for most late 60s - early 70s applications. If you don't have any idea where the car was sold originally, but DO have the zone and dealer numbers, then this should help you narrow the search somewhat. Keep in mind that some zones covered a very large geographical area while others were quite small.
01 - Flint (MI) 02 - Tarrytown (NY) 03 - St. Louis (MO) 04 - Minneapolis (MN) 05 - Kansas City (KS) 06 - Oakland (CA) 07 - Dallas (TX) 08 - Atlanta (GA) 09 - Norwood (OH) 10 - Denver (CO) 11 - Chicago (IL) 12 - Buffalo (NY) 13 - Pittsburgh (PA) 14 - Baltimore (MD) 15 - Philadelphia (PA) 16 - Charlotte (NC) 17 - Memphis (TN) 18 - Des Moines (IA) 19 - Portland (OR) 20 - Los Angeles (CA) 21 - Janesville (WI) 22 - Louisville (KY) 23 - Oklahoma City (OK) 24 - New Orleans (LA) 25 - Indianapolis (IN) 26 - Jacksonville (FL) 27 - New York (NY) 28 - Cleveland (OH) 29 - Omaha (NE) 30 - Houston (TX) 31 - Birmingham (AL) 32 - Cambridge (MA) 33 - Fargo (ND) 34 - San Diego (CA) 35 - Newark (NJ) 36 - Salt Lake (UT) 37 - Richmond (VA) 38 - Great Falls (MT) 39 - El Paso (TX) 40 - Charleston (WV) 41 - Wichita (KS) 42 - Seattle (WA) 43 - Portland (ME) 44 - Detroit (MI) 45 - South Bend (IN) 46 - Green Bay (WI) 47 - Peoria (IL) 48 - Syracuse (NY) 49 - Harrisburg (PA) 61 - Milwaukee (WI) 62 - Shreveport (LA) 64 - Scranton (PA) 69 - Amarillo (TX) 70 - San Antonio (TX) 71 - Bloomfield (NJ) 72 - Fort Worth (TX) 73 - Long Island City (NY) 78 - Oakland (GM Overseas Export) 79 - Hawaii 80 - GM Canada 81 - Vancouver, British Columbia 82 - Calgary, Alberta 83 - Regina, Saskatchewan 84 - Winnipeg, Manitoba 85 - London, Ontario 86 - Montreal, Quebec 87 - Moncton, New Brunswick 88 - Ste. Thanks stan, I know my car was sold somewhere in New England but cant find the dealer code 34. Also not sure if zone 43 is actually Maine or if Portland Maine is just a centralized zone that includes New Hampshire and Vermont as stated on my NCRS report.

You’re welcome… And you’re correct about the location as well. Just because the corporate office was located in Portland, Maine doesn’t mean that the zone didn’t encompass parts (or all) of neighboring states as well. To be honest, that’s probably the case that you are dealing with here.
Let me throw one other idea out there. I poked around the usual sites for additional information to your question. There was a reference made to a 1967 L-88 that supposedly sold from this zone/dealer. I don’t get too involved with 1967s, but you may want to reach out on the NCRS site and see if someone is familiar with this car (if it is real/exists). My understanding is that most of the 20 1967 L-88s are known (the last list that I had showed 16-18 if I recall correctly) so if the story is true, you might find someone who knows the answer.
Stan,
I've seen your dealer posts on a few other forums going back about 20 years! Were the zones and dealer numbers used by all of GM's lines? For example if a dealer sold Chevrolet and Pontiac, did they have the same zone/dealer number? Along the same lines, why would a dealer have 2 numbers (Cantin w/88 & 87)?
I came across this short zone 43 list on a Chevelle forum - dealer #34 isn't shown, but one can see what and where dealer locations were for the Portland, ME zone.
Each division had their own zone/dealer numbers… Chevrolet’s numbers were different from Pontiac’s were different from Buick’s, etc. If a dealer happened sell Chevys and Pontiacs, there would be specific zones/dealers for each.
Your first table (from the NCRS site) is where I located the L-88 info (third item from the top).
I checked the Chevelle site too… They always have good info!
I don’t know exactly what they are doing these days, but the numbers changed considerably back in the early 1980s so even if they are using zone/dealer numbers today, they aren’t the same as what they were back in the 1960s/1970s.
The only thing I've thought of is asking the C1/2/3 Registry to export their database of zones/dealers to see if a car listed with that info also has the Protect-o-Plate or other original dealer info... unless this info is already compiled and updated with NCRS.
I checked my database and do not have that dealer. However, I do have an entry stating the dealer zone and code came from Vintage Vehicle Reports in Canada. You may want to reach out to them and see if they can help with dealer info: https://www.vintagevehicleservices.com/contact
