Default Rag Joint

The steering in my 1973 coupe is a little "vague". I brought the car to a mechanic who specializes in classic Corvettes and asked him to check out the rag joint. He tightened the steering box, but did not replace the rag joint, stating that the rag joint was not in bad condition. The steering is better, but still not as exact as it should be (tends to still wander a little with the wheel centered).

Here is a pic of the current rag joint. Any thoughts/ideas?

If the box wasn’t adjusted correctly then the gears will be wrecked.
It doesn’t matter if a vette shop worked on it or not.
I would bet you lunch the box needs to be adjusted and most likely correctly rebuilt.

Also, the rag appears to be separating and distorted. You may want to remove it for a better inspection

FWIW...while I do know GTR I have no affiliation commercially with him other than being one of many satisfied customers. When it comes to C3 vette steering I have yet to learn of anyone more knowledgeable alive today and bonus he is a super guy. But do your research and if you wanna get your steering the best it can be...pull the box and get it to Gary. They don't make em like him anymore. Good luck.

Tightening the box was not the correct move, as stated it prob needed or will need now a rebuild & that joint is shot / take it out & smoke it.

If you're used to medern cars with rack and pinion steering rack, that's what a steering box feels like no matter if everything is brand new.
