Default Splash Shield

Late 1969 build.

How does this passenger side Splash Shield attach on the left side? There is a threaded stud plate on the right, on the left there is just a plate. By the look of the white Splash Shield the left side is slotted, is it suppose to slide under that plate? There is also that screw and metal piece attached to the white shield likely not original. See pictures below.

Thanks

Rick

Rick,

First, sometime late in the 1969 model year, the white plastic shields (vertical) were supposedly changed to the metal shields that are routinely seen on 1970 Corvettes. I say supposedly because I’ve seen some rather late 1969s and they have all had the white plastic shields. My own late 1969 (#36644) had them as well (out of curiosity, when was your car built?)

Having said that, the white shield that you have should have a matching tab (to the one present) with a hole in it that is installed over a stud and secured with a flanged nut. One of the studs (and tabs) is obviously missing (you can see the holes where it was installed) and an incorrect mount riveted in.

It appears that someone modified the splash shield to make it work… This is not how the factory did it.

Stan Falenski

Thanks Stan
"when was your car built?" October 1969. What do you mean "Tabs" I think I understand your reference as threaded stud?

Now that you pointed out the rivets I see that they do not match the rivets on the right side. I guess I was thrown by the slotted connection point on the white shield to think maybe it could be correct because both on the driver side and the one on the right passenger side were the same oval holes. God knows what these engineers were thinking when they came up with some of the designs on these Corvettes, so I wouldn't put it past them. I'll have to see if that part (riveted stud) is available.

Rick,

The shields should look like this (with two tabs).

Looks like there is one for non A/C and another for A/C. See pic below.

Now I'm back to thinking it could be correct for my A/C??

It’s interesting, no doubt. Could it be a factory modified/installed piece? Perhaps… Looks like a really neat job whoever did it.

I’d still think that there would be two attaching studs on the firewall to mount it regardless of whether the shields is real or not. Sounds as if you have some more research to do…

Rick,
I was going to post pics of my replaced original shields, but my 69 is an April 7th non--A/C car.

Hello Rick. On my late build 69 the shield is metal and both sides have a studed plate that it attaches teo. I suspect that the stud on the left plate has simple broken off sometime and that's the reason someone added the piece to the shield. Take care.
