Default Keys

I had some keys cut from my locksmith for my 72 Corvette. They will work the ignition but not the doors like the original key I have.
what should I do? I have the correct blanks>

On some years, like my 73, the ignition key is DIFFERENT than the door key. Look in your owners manual to see what the set up was from the factory.

From the '72 owner info:

You mentioned the original key you have, does the new key match – not only the tumbler cut but the grooving on both sides? Take that with you when you go back to the locksmith and let them know the key isn't working in the doors (you tried both?). Can you take the car too? (Just to make sure, the proper rectangular key blank for '72 is a C-code.)

I had exactly this problem on my 69. Key worked in ignition but would not lock or unlock doors. For five years I thought someone had changed the locks. When getting a copy made I discovered the shank was too short on what I thought was an original key, thus not letting the key go far enough in to the door lock! It's a tiny bit longer, but length does matter!

Sometimes, the person making the new keys doesn't insert the blank correctly in the grinder. Put a new key on top of an 'original' key and look over the peaks and valleys very carefully. The flat portion behind the key pattern needs to be in the same EXACT position, also.
