I’m wondering if I can put the dash pad in this is 1981,with steering wheel on,and I do have tilt, and when I took it out,I already had the steering wheel off,so,had no issues but,I am doing it by myself, wasn’t sure ,I’m assuming I can.
Yes, it is possible. But you need to drop the steering column by removing the two attaching bolts and support strap under the column at the dash area and loosening the bolts at the firewall plate (do not remove them). This will help you gain access to the dash area.
You really need a copy of the AIM for your model year, as it details the CORRECT routing of harnesses and wires, which is particularly important...if you want all to go back together properly.
Removing the steering wheel provides even better access.
You can, but I would take the time to remove the wheel. All this work and you don't want to bend the pad a little too much and get a crease or crack in it.
