Default gas gauge

OK, so I replaced my fuel sending unit. Still no reading at gas gauge even with almost a full tank of gas., However, if I manually move the float up and down the gas gauge needle moves accordingly. Anyone have any idea what to do? Thank you

Is the float arm jambed against something inside the tank? Hitting a wall for instance? All connections good? Good ground connections on both ends of that ground wire?

No mention of year of car, so, wild guess, 75-77 bladder coming inwards and holding the float?

all grounds are good, someone else mentioned the possibility of the float arm hitting side of tank, but it doesn't appear to do so as I can very easily move it up and down and I do not "feel" it rubbing against the tank

Do the Wiggle Test: Watch the gauge and wiggle both ends of the ground wire slowly with your fingertips.

Then do the same to the Tan sending unit wire as far along it as you can reach in case it's nearly pinched in two at some point.

Did you notice any fluctuation/any weird readings on the gas gauge?

Is it actually floating at whatever level the fuel is, or laying on the bottom

I installed a new sending unit in my 61 Mercury a while back and it worked fine. Then after a while I noticed it didn't read anymore. Checked everything and still nothing. I sold the car not long ago and told the new owner. After he removed the sending unit he found that the brass float was filled with gas and holding it down. Just a thought if it's nothing else.

Yup, if the float doesn't float. That's an issue.
it works when you manually move the float arm. But doesn't on it's own? It's stuck, it's not floating? The wiring is somehow different on its own as opposed to when your testing. The sending unit could be shorted. Your testing with the float removed from the tank? Just maybe. And when you install the sending unit to the tank it's getting shorted to ground?
