Default 1968 Corvette Canister

Hi, I have a 1968 Corvette and I was hoping some one could tell what the cylindrical canister that is connected to the firewall is. Its located on the passenger side and had a hose which I don’t know what it connects to.

I suggest you acquire a 1968 Corvette Shop Manual and an AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual).

I take it, it connects to the carburetor?

No, those vacuum lines connect to a vacuum actuator I believe.

Default 68 Corvette Cylindrical Canister Purpose ( Passenger Side)

Ok thanks. I ordered a manual as the previous gentleman suggested, the hose was just dangling so I will need to figure out where to connect it.

I'm redoing my 1968 wiper door actuator and everything that goes with it so I should be able to tell you where the actuator is but I think 68 is different than a 1969. the front hose should have a red stripe and the back is green that goes to the actuator.

Here is the vacuum system for a 69. The 68 is basically the same, but they might have some of the parts in slightly different locations.

DocRebuild.com sells some awesome vacuum hose kits. I had a set put on my 1968 C3 back in the early 1990's and they are still working like new. I have been wiping them down with silicone oil to keep them nice and fresh looking. The reproduction hoses have all the correct markings on them and are made of very high quality hose.

If your Hoses are more than 25 years old you might want to replace them. I found that putting a little grease on the fitting before putting the hose on makes them go together faster and come apart when you want them to. If the ends get a bit loose and start to leak then trim off the last 1/2" of the hose and re-install it.

The vacuum system on the 1968 Corvette is fairly complicated so you might want to get a wall chart showing the orientation of the vacuum hoses. Again, DocRebuild has some good charts and wiring diagrams for the 1968 Corvette. He makes a chart that has the connectors pictured on it and identifies them as to where they are used. DocRebuild has a LOT of good products at fair prices.

On the 1968 Corvette your vacuum system does several things, it opens and closes the headlights, it opens and closes the wiper door allowing the windshield wipers to work. There are two ***** that get pulled down to operate and a turn **** in the middle down on the right side of the steering wheel at the bottom of the dash. These pull down ***** will open the headlights or the wiper door and the **** in the middle should stop the windshield wiper in the middle of it's path. This is how you change the wipers on a 1968 Corvette. It is just a bit strange how it works the first time you play with it.

While ordering a manual for your C3 I hope that you ordered a factory service manual for your Corvette and not some aftermarket manual. I have had more troubles with the aftermarket "shop" manuals being inaccurate or just plain wrong. Rockauto sells the factory manuals on their site under literature and they offer them on DVD's so you don't have to buy the expensive printed version. I would stick to using the GM manuals and forget the rest....

I have a copy of the 1968-1982 Corvette Headlight and Wiper Door Vacuum Systems Troubleshooting Guide and I can send you a copy via PM if you would like. It shows the 1968 vacuum system is different than the early 1969 vacuum system but the later 1969 vacuum system was more like the 1968 system. The "early 1969" has three outlets on the vacuum reservoir where the 1968 has 2. The headlights system on a 1968 uses one vacuum relay in front versus the "early1969" used two vacuum relays. The later 1969 system went back to an arrangement much more like the 1968 vacuum system.

Be sure to check and if needed replace the check valve used in the vacuum loop. This part fails every so often and it is good to replace it before it breaks.

On the 68, the actuator relay is in the passenger front fender just above the wiper reservoir...its a pita to get to. It has 4 hoses going to it. The only person that sells the correct size hoses for any year corvette vacuum system is Doc Rebuild. As for the actuator on the firewall it should have 2 hoses coming from that relay in the fender. As for the 68 vs 69 system that actuator relay is next to the brake master on the firewall, the actuator is a pie plate and the 69 has a wiper door postion interlock safety in the wiper bay as part of the vacuum system
