Hey, 82 cross fire owner here. I’m having some
wierd electrical symptoms. This started very recently, I will list them all out here
1) about once a car trip, I will be cruising at about 2000 rpm, then the car will decide to drop down to about 1000rpm and start jumping around there, regardless of where the throttle is. And no, it’s not the torque converter clutch, it’s just a straight up drop in RPM and power. It usually recovers in about 10 mins, or after I restart the car.
2) sometimes the car won’t start when I turn the key. No crank, not sure if I hear the fuel pump relay engage. Sometimes when I turn the key back to off and on again it’ll work. It’s random
these issues might all be seperate problems, or they might tie into the same problem. I’m not sure rn, I will continue to try to troubleshoot it, but the random nature of it makes it difficult to diagnose. Any ideas here/places to start looking? Thanks
Update: she left me stranded. Same symptoms except now the car won’t crank at all. Getting power from battery and lights dim when turning to start but no crank
Update: it’s home. I plugged in a scanner to the computer and it says it’s reading crank when I go to crank. I’m guessing it’s the starter but can someone else confirm?

Most likely a bad solenoid. If you pull the starter, most auto part stores will test them for free
But that wont cause your rpm drop while driving, that sounds like a coil going bad or an ignition control module. Does your car store codes?

I didn’t see any codes. I don’t think the 82s had an ignition control module? It’s still a mechanic distributor the computer does very little other than control the port injectors

I dont know exactly what that fuel injection has for controllers. Im just saying what would cause that issue. If it doesnt have an ICM or ECM then thats one less possibility. If the port injectors are computer controlled then theres something else to look at
