Default 1969 Rearview Mirror Question

The ball socket on my rearview mirror is loose in spite of tightening the center support screw. Is there a way to fix the old one to tighten it up or will a new mounting plate fix this issue? I figured someone has dealt with this before so I thought I’d check on the forum before I bought a new one.

You're talking about the mirror inside, top center of the windshield? I added a very thin piece of leather above the ball; a bit of cereal box board would work fine too. You're just looking to take up the excess space so the ball is gripped more tightly.

Remove the Chrome Screw, and examine it very closely, mine was stripped.

The screw seems fine. I’m thinking after 50+ years, the housing has enlarged just enough to make it sloppy. I was hoping I was missing a bushing but none of the diagrams show one. I’ll try the piece of leather. Thanks everyone.

I've used a small cut patch of milk carton material (LDPE).
Insert in the ball/socket joint and retighten.
This gives the added thickness for improved tightness but also minimum friction added.
Let me know how it works out.

I switched the ball socket screw to one you tighten with an Allen wrench and tightened the bejesus out of it, Worked great!

I also fixed the bottom screw by inserting a bit of .003 shim from a feeler gauge. Perfect!
