Default Looking for the Firewall Insulator Plenum Panel

In the AIM for my 73 it shows there is a insulator plenum panel that is attached with adhesive to the inside of the firewall just above the firewall insulation.
I searched for a couple hours for the left and right side pieces and can’t find them for sale at any of the vendors.
I looked through all my disassembly pictures and don’t see there was one installed when I removed the interior and dash.
Was it just the woven stuff that was glued up under the dash or was there something else missing from my car.
Is it something necessary?
If so, does anyone know where I can purchase the two pieces?
Thanks in advance!

OCB, I wish I could give you a difinitive answer but I checked my basement for the '71 parts storage and I found no trace of those insulators. I also don't recall if they were there when I disassembled her...

My 71 AIM does show another "Insulator-Dash" (3956230) that goes un the firewall under the steering column and is held in place with a plastic "Cover-Dash" (3956189). I know that piece is a wool/jute type of insulation and since it and the Plenum Panel pieces are both called "Insulators," I'm GUESSING that the pieces you're interested in are the woven material you mentioned. As for them being necessary - only to reduce heat coming from the engine compartment is my thought...

My 78 had something similar up there. Years ago I bought from GM a large sheet of gray colored underhood insulation and been cutting pieces off it for things like this. 3M spray adhesive holds it in place. Not 100% correct but then, nobody will ever see it. Should someone actually look under the dash and gets a glimpse of it, does look factory-ish. Think it's about 1/2" thick-maybe 5/8 at the most.
Just a thought.

"Insulator Plenum" references 1 and 4 above look like they are pointing to the under dash sound deadener that gets glued on for the '68-'75 cars.

Hello,

Here's a photo of that area on my 71 firewall.
There are also 2 smaller pieces of that material on each side of the steering wheel mounting bracket.
There was a similar mat used on the transmission tunnel around the shifter.

Regards.......

The 'jute' material about 1/2" to 3/4" thick. Loosely pressed together.

In place on passengers side. Fastened in place with a little 'interior' adhesive.

Partialy cut to bend around firewall.

Thanks everyone.
Those pieces definitely look different than what’s in the AIM.
Zip has it on back order so I will give them a call for their delivery date.
I did have a portion of it glued to the firewall when I disassembled my 73’s interior.
It appears a prior owner removed part of it.
Alan and ACFarmerNC are both correct and it does appear to just be Jute material.
Here are a couple pictures of my under dash when I disassembled it.

While my comment doesn't pertain to your jute question, I was reminded that I failed to take a picture at this point and couldn't figure out how to route things a couple of months later when it was time to put things back together.

One thing that was an absolute bitch was having all the panel lights hanging from the harness and trying to get them all plugged in again while wiggling the cluster back in place.

What I did was to cut them all loose, gang them all together (they light up en masse anyway), plug them into the cluster prior to re-assembly and install a connector to the firewall source with enough room to connect the wires back outside of the cluster when it was finally in place.

This is off the top of my head from memory, it was 12 years ago now.

Hello OCB,

Yup! That's the stuff!

Regards...

Interesting... it seems according to your photo the jute didn't continue behind the defroster duct. I often wondered about that.

Thanks again Alan!
I called Zip Corvette and their sales representative told me they will have the pieces available soon.
He said they will be receiving the material for the pieces on November 07 and once they get it cut the pieces will be ready for sale.

Hello OCB,

Over the last couple of decades I've seen and bought some from the regular suppliers but what I got would work but was quite different than my original stuff.
So I didn't use it.
It could be JUST FINE for your use though!!

Regards......

Hello,

Caskiguy was generous enough to send me some of the original jute from his car a few years ago.
What he sent is for the transmission tunnel around the shifter. I don't know what I'd have done without it since I've never seen some offered.
I REALLY appreciate that he was willing to give it up.

Regards....

There is also a piece of the same jute running across the top of the carpet for the seat bulkhead.

These are the pieces that are placed on top of the transmission tunnel

Thanks again everyone.

Alan, if you just have the pieces stored and would like to get rid of them, please send me a PM.
I would expect to pay you something for them plus the cost of shipping.

I have the new firewall insulation ready to install.
I just need the pieces that go above it.

Hello OCB,
My car and all the parts and 'materials' that I accumulated for 50+ years are gone.
If I still had any of the jute pieces I'd GLADLY send them to you.

Playing with an old car can be BIG fun!!!

Regards.....
