I had the stock
190HP L-48 in my 1980, next was the 350 H.O.
330HP, then I upgraded to a
550HP 406. I was thinking about the
540HP 427 from Blueprint Engines OR the
670HP 434 from Skipwhiteperformance.

What are you doing with it? If you are changing it for more power then go all the way....Ive got a 580hp bbc 427. Super happy with it. All i would gain by more hp would be longer burnouts, not that there is anything wrong with that
I'd go LS. On a 67 Nova project I had a LS2 block sleeved by Race Engine Development out of CA. Stroked it 427 cubes. Cam was 225I/230E. Stock LS3 heads. Did 495 hp on the chassis dyno with a 4L60E. 3200 stall Yank converter. Drove like a stocker until you nailed it.
The alum LS is 200 or more lbs less than a big block?

If you need more power than a crate LS3, add a turbo (or two).
If I were to re-engine my 68, I'd go with a LS. The engine is favorably sized for the C3 engine bay and there's lots of parts and expertise among engine builders for this series of engines. I'd opt for the aluminum engine block versions. u
My last engine build was an all aluminum BB, 492 cubic inches, internally balanced. Calles crank and rods. Fuel Tech injection. 630 hp @ 7000 rpms.
Whichever you choose, I’M JELOUS! But I think I’d go with the 427 (for nostalgia & cool factor as I’m a big gasser fan and 427’s are the go to in that world) and because 540hp in these cars is waaaay more than plenty. I would think it would be better mannered all around too (if a 540hp set up could be considered as “well mannered”). Wish I was in a position to make such a choice!!!
As far as the weight savings of 200 #’s of an LS…that equates to roughly 20 ponies being freed up, which to me is not worth all of the additional effort it takes to go LS (even though there’s also a cool factor with that set up) Just my opinion though.
