Hello. A riend recently bought a 1970 Chevelle and is confused about what exactly engine he has. On the pad at the front passenger side the larger numbers are V04115Q, perhaps a 0 not a Q The smaller numbers are 781141238. He believes those are the correct # and letters are correct but says it's hard to see due to where it is stored. The numbers on the block at the drivers side at the back are 3814678. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

This is a small block from Flint, Michigan, assembled on April 11th. There was no year indicated in this stamp. The "5" is probably an S. The code SQ is not in the Lime reference book, so it's likely not a Q and your friend needs to make sure there's not an additional letter after the "Q".
Here's the link to the Lime Book - it is sorted by code and provides usage years, size/HP, and application abbreviations: Lime Book in PDF Format (a C2 Sticky)
@Nowhere Man is knowledgable on Chevelles to decipher the 781141238.
The site NastyZ28 has a lot of info on the block casting numbers and their date ranges of use (probably #3814671, not #3814678)
Besides rechecking the numbers on the stamp pad, your friend needs to recheck the casting number too.
3814678 is the casting number for a 62-64 409/380 and 409/400 single 4 bbl intake manifold, it was never a block casting number. The casting number is likely 3914678 which is a 68 small block 302/327/350 block, but not a block ever used in 1970 Chevelles or other 70 Chevys.
Finally the suffix code, whether it is 5Q, SQ, SO or some other combination of two letters, can't be a 70 Chevrolet suffix code as all 1970 suffix codes were 3 letters, not two.
Thanks for the replies. I think I'll Leave it to him to fiqure it out. The car is in storage on his in-laws property and he doesn't seem to be in a hurry to look over the numbers again. Thanks again.
