Default Differential Color

I am in the process of restoring the frame on a 72 base 350.
The differential is currently out of the frame.
What color (to look like new) should it be?

I have no idea what the OEM color should be. I painted mine Gloss Blak to prevent rust...the Gloss Black quickly turns to Satin Black because of road acid and road grime.

Thank you both. I was not sure if it was to be black or silver.

Some 63's were black, 64-79 were bare iron.

Here is a Diff I custom built, keeping it bare iron, treated with RPM. Most I paint but it's up to the owner on how it is finished.

Beautiful!
How did you get your half shafts to look like that?

Hello,
There are typically several issues here:
The finish on the 'tube',
The appearance of 'heat zone'
The finish on the cast iron parts.
The finish on the u-joints.
The finish on the fasteners.
Regards...

The 'heat zone' was created using a propane torch. After a little experimenting, the size, color, and extent of the 'band' was controllable. A little semi-flat clear preserves it.
There was enough of the original fastener finish left to copy it in plating the small parts.

I have done that for some builds, and it looks great. However, the shafts were new and not pitted as most used shafts are. The propane torch blued them like that.
Trying to get used shafts like that will require some polishing but that won't get the pits out, just the surface.

The surface on Alans is perfect. If I recall the car was near perfect in every aspect. A lot of time and labor was required to achieve that.

if you want it looking the best, I suggest using the Cast Blast can after prepping it. It paints, protects with a finish that looks like the bare metal blasted look. It’s really quite spectacular.

Thank you Alan!
Last question… how did you polish the half shafts?
