Yes, I have the AW as 3.08. Thanks. I can’t figure out the other codes. What’s the date code, for example?

It isn’t a 1969 differential… The date system for 1969 is considerably different than what is presented here. This particular style was used on 1971 and later differentials. All we can tell by what is stamped is that the differential was assembled on the 256th day of the year. To determine WHAT year, you’ll need to look at the casting number on the differential housing… Once you know that, you can determine what model year it was originally installed in.

Regards,

Stan Falenski

I guess that makes more sense. September 13th 1969 was a Saturday. “AW” was used until 1975, but that year was also a Saturday. That leaves 1971-74.

So the H 27 8, would indicate Aug 27, 1968?

correct, but a look inside would tell if it was 68 or 78. The posi case, spiders, and caps were different.

So the chart above says an AW 3.08 was heavy duty 427, meaning the stub axles would be different than say a small block?

BB got the "HD" axles, shot-peened 1/2 shafts, posi case, and I believe the HD outer axles.
The axles were no better than the standard axles. The cap and bolts were the difference. The case hardening was the same, they wore out the same.
The 1/2 shafts still were 1350 and the joint is the weak link
The posi cases used in 68 were bad as well. Last year for the first version of the Eaton posi.
The outer axles were ok but still broke at the base of the threads with enough abuse.
Many have paid more for BB diff's thinking they were better, they were not.
