This might be a silly question .........but. I've got a 69 convertible. A pic of the underside of the deck lid is attached. You can see the cable attached with the clip. The mounting hole beneath it is for the rod of the soft top release. According to the assembly manual there is suppose to be a bracket and a bumper in between those two mounting holes. As you can see, my deck lid had no mounting holes for the bracket that holds the bumper. It's the same on the other side too. This is a very early car produced in the 2nd week of production. Were these brackets and bumpers added later?
I just tried to check my late-ish 68. It’s tough because the hardtop is installed and the canvas top is in the way under it but I did not see the bumper nor do I recall seeing one before. Since your car is early it may have been added after yours was built.

Still looking for input on this situation. Does anyone else have a deck lid without those brackets or know of a reason why they wouldn't be there on my car? Could this possibly be an aftermarket deck lid? The picture that C69VETE sent shows his deck lid being pretty smooth and nice on the under side where mines looks fairly rough comparativly.
Could your car originally have been a hardtop only car and the folding top added later? Someone with a hardtop only car would have to check if the deck lid is drilled for the bumper brackets.
My car was originally hardtop only per the tank sheet. November 69 production, bought in late summer of 70 from a buddy who decided to join the military. It has the bumpers factory installed. I bought the soft top around 78 from a wrecked 69 the owner was parting out.
The nut plates are riveted in behind the hole. This area is fiberglass so just putting a screw in there will not hold long. A brass or aluminum rivet nut with the proper size hole would be a solid option if you want to install the bumpers.
I think your best bet is to get answers from late 68 owners since you have an early 69.
My car is late May (early June completed). I will try again to crawl in there with a light to check since the hardtop is attached (and the soft top makes it hard to see the underside) but I just don’t ever recall seeing that on mine. I’ve owned it since 1985.
I just messaged a friend who is an NCRS Master Judge and kind of a 68 /69 GURU.
Now he owns a very early 68 but said his car does not have the bumpers and there is no provision for them. He added he has judged a ton of 68s and none had the bumpers.
My guess is you never had them.

Thank you so much for getting that info. My guess is also that it never had them. I have the 68/69 judging manual and it doesn't say anything about them either. The assembly manual doesn't say anything about a change either. So my guess is they just used the the left over 68 deck lids on the early ones until they ran out and then started using the ones for the 69s. Thanks again for all your help everyone.
