Boy, it's tight under the dash even with the seat and steering wheel out!! What size are the mounting bolts because it seems like I will have to do this replacement by feel unless there are any (I hope!!) suggestions! My body in my 60s isn't as malleable as I might need!

I've torn my dash apart over a dozen times in 40 years. About the last time I finally decided to remove the steering column (as I had read many times)......and it was a great idea--- wish I'd done it all along. I recommend it.
On a 68 it is really easy and quick. I'd just do it before even attempting to work in that tight space.

Easy. Take pictures of the rag joint connection, pint the wheels straight ahead, hold the wheel up with a rope (or whatnot)....I have a convertible so I just held mine up to something in the garage.
You then unbolt and remove..... pretty dang straightforward.
If you do get in there and remove it take pictures.... it'll help us all later.

CAUTION:
Curious what part your using to "REPLACE" your 68 brake light switch with ? It's a one year only part & nothing aftermarket will work unless modified ( 69 ) . Careful of catalogues that list 1968 parts as 68 - 72 or 68 - 82 they are 99% wrong & totally useless / clueless when it come to everything & anything 68 related !!!
I will have my 68 coupe for 54 years in July. While buying a part at the Chevy dealer, for the Vette of course, a guy wanted to buy the notorious 68 brake light switch at the parts counter. Since I recognized it right away, I asked him what vehicle it was for and he said an old Chevy truck!
I went through three of them and then changed to the 1963-1967, 1969-1982 cheap plunger switch. On a 68 the big problem is that there is no hole on the brake pedal for the one metal tab that pushes the plunger in. With todays compact battery powered drills, you might be able to drill the hole. I got mad after buying the conversion parts and I brazed the part to my pedal with my torch. Lou.

That switch doesn't look CORRECT. Until you get it out & match it up it's hard to tell, I hope not ! I wound up returning several because they were all wrong. NOT one catalogue / distributor had a clue what they were talking about. I bought the last one from Top Fight, because it was printed as 68 not the typical 68 - 72 or 68 - 82 like most BUT that one was incorrect as well. I wound up with a 69 switch & wasn't happy that a brand new part had to be heated up & bent / drilled ( as stated above ) and the pig tail had to be cut & extended to reach. The pig tail, should measure 10" long every one that I returned was only 5". WHAT A JOKE !!! The correct original 68 switch is pictured below. Where did you get yours ? Let us know how you make out. On my previous 68 after changing the brake light switch it turned out to be a faulty "TURN SIGNAL SWITCH " ( had no brake lights ) go figure. Welcome to the 68 one year only curse / GOOD LUCK !!
